Best Fruit and Snacks For a Diabetic Patient?

A friend of mine landed in the hospital with her case of Diabetes. Its suppose to be the bad case called Ketoacidosis. Anyways, I wanted to get a get well fruit basket done for her. It wouldn%26#039;t be all fruit in it; there would also be magazines and snacks. What snacks and fruit would be best to give to her?? I know her diet is very particular at this point.

Best Fruit and Snacks For a Diabetic Patient?
I have been a diabetic for 22 years so you can trust me. Bananas are about the worst fruit you can give a diabetic. They are full of starch. Why don%26#039;t you just stay away from the food all together? Give her a basketful of things she can enjoy without having to worry about how the gift is going to affect her blood sugar.
Reply:i have been a diabetic for ten years, so you can trust me. bananas are the best fruits for diabetics. what she needs is peanut butter (if not allergic.) For the first couple of months, I focused on mainly eating peanut butter like the hospital doctors told me and it made everything so much easier to handle (controls blood sugar well.) For other fruits, red grapes would be next in line followed by grapefruits. Crackers of any kind (saltine, graham, etc.) are also brilliant for diabetics. There are also some diabetes-focused food options such as chocolate bars and granola bars in the health section of kroger where all the vitamins and stuff are. Basically, give those fruits and for snacks focus on anything peanut butter, crackers, or diabetes-made.
Reply:Some good snacks for diabetics are peanut butter crackers, bananas and sugar free candy (this can be found in most pharmacies now...it%26#039;s great...since I love peanut butter cups).

Before you send the fruit basket, my advice would be to ask a CDE (certified diabetes educator) and see what they would recommend. This was, you won%26#039;t accidentally send the wrong thing.

It%26#039;s nice that you are thinking of her.
Reply:Diabetes is tricky because no matter what you give her she has to count the starch and sugars and fibre in, so if I were you I%26#039;d stick with fruit, and let her and the hospital staff peg when she can have it...

or get her things that don%26#039;t require the effort like magazines/books/pjs
Reply:try giving dried fruit. It only has natural sugars in it and it gives the sense of being candy, only a healthy candy.
Reply:Don%26#039;t give your friend food. I know you mean well, but she needs to work closely with her doctor right now to clamp down on her diet and really get a handle on it. It%26#039;s very complicated, and she doesn%26#039;t need goodies right now, even %26quot;healthy%26quot; goodies like fruit. Diabetics have to be very careful even with %26quot;healthy%26quot; fruit. Give your friend magazines, body lotion, things like that.
