In fruit Basket, why are tohru's relatives so mean?

I just finished episode 5





Kyo is right, she needs to stop holding it in, they need to know what%26#039;s in her mind!! Her name was riceball that is so sad, that%26#039;s not a fruit, she is very lonely, i%26#039;m glad she found kyo and yuki.





shigure makes me laugh HAHA! It seems like yuki is in love with Tohru, maybe kyo as well.





Why were Tohru%26#039;s relatives so mean, Tohru didn%26#039;t do anything bad, she was so nice and tried to do everything they said. If there was a girl who lived in this world in real life, i would cry all day and do something about it!! It%26#039;s so sad if i knew this happend in reality, poor tohru!!!

the relatives are actually from her dead father%26#039;s family.


her mother has no family members and she was a delinquent.
Reply:There are a few reasons for this, the main one being Tohru%26#039;s mother who was the leader of a gang when she was younger. They believed that Tohru would grow up to follow her mother%26#039;s example. In other words they think that she will be a bad seed even though she is anything but!


Her grandfather doesn%26#039;t dislike her but sees her for the person that she is. However there are a few strains that are being put on the family as far as money is concerned. Yes she is working part time to cover her tuition for school and such but there is still the whole feeding and providing thing for her that her relatives see as nothing more than a burden.

I guess they don%26#039;t like Tohru cuz they don%26#039;t like her mom because Kyoko was in a gang so they think Tohru%26#039;s going to be a delinquent too. Even though that%26#039;s the complete opposite of reality!

Reply:tohru, being such a nice girl, had to have mean people in her life (ergo her relatives) so that it they could emphasize just how great a character she is.. its not like you can clearly understand how unique an individual she is if her relatives were all kind people. also, she wouldnt have stayed with yuki and his family if her relatives were nice, would she?

too bad rin is not in the anime. i love her so much. in the manga she is haru%26#039;s girlfriend.





but oh, the best character has to be akito. in the manga she%26#039;s actually a girl but raised as a boy. in the anime, shes just a guy. the anime doesnt have much bout her, but shes awesome in the manga. shes as mean as ever, but there;s more bout her in the manga.





sorry i got carried away, to answer your question, well coz they%26#039;re not close to eachtoher. partly because tohru%26#039;s mum was in a girl gang. so they assumed tohru%26#039;s as bad as her which is why they made lewd remarks bout she staying with 3 guys alone.
